Spinal Cord Injury And Rehabilitation Centre

PROGRESS OF REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR WHEEL CHAIR PATIENTS. SPECIALLY PERSONS SUFFERING FROM SPINAL CORD INJURIES.

Rehabilitation of wheel chair persons suffering from spinal cord injuries. This Centre was started in Pingalwara on 11-02-2020. Opening ceremony was performed by then deputy commissioner of Amritsar, S. Shivdular Singh. Actually medical doctors’ even specialists of spinal cord are not much aware of rehabilitation. So persons suffering from spinal cord injuries become dependent on others for their daily needs. They used to suffer from bed- sores, Urinary Tract Infection and depression. Mr. Davinder Singh who is Vice-President of spinal cord injury association of India got rehabilitation training at rehabilitation Centre started by Mr. Ahluwalia In Delhi. Now he can drive a car also and can shift from wheel chair to bed, wheel chair to toilet and is careful about his body to avoid bed-sores and is doing business also. I was inspired from him and started thinking to provide these services to persons suffering from spinal cord injuries free of cost. Everybody cannot afford to go to Delhi for rehabilitation because that is very costly also. Since 11-02-2020 seven permanent residents of Pingalwara are rehabilitated and most of them are now trainers. Mr. Imran who is also suffering from spinal cord injuries trained our patients to use special wheel- chairs and they become independent. To do their own daily work along with they provide services in Pingalwara e.g. working on bakery. Two of them were sent to lovely university for training. Biscuits prepared by them are consumed by all inmates of Pingalwara. Two of the inmates go to printing press and are working there Pingalwara also admits such persons from any part of India for one month or so train them not only to be independent rather they can be useful to their families and society. Two persons are admitted at a time. When they become independent, they are sent back to their homes. Then two more one admitted. Following services are provided to them. 

1. Counseling :- they come out of depression 
2. Medical Services: – condition of their kidneys. Other tests are done.  
3. Physiotherapy and exercises arms and back  
4. Occupational therapy 
5. Meditation 
6. Wheel Chair training.

Following 13 patients came from their homes they were provided rehabilitation services became independent and were sent back to their homes happily.

Date of Discharge: – 12-08-2021

Age: – 44 years old

Improvement: – exercises of arms with Dumbbell. Initially he could not carry one Kilo dumbbell. When discharged he could do exercise with four kilo Dumbbell. His shoulder was frozen and now that has become free. With training he can climb on ramp. He can raise the front wheel of the wheel chair and of can pass any hurdle. 

Now he can shift to bed from wheel- Chair and from wheel chair to bed or to toilet. Previously two people used to help him to shift. He could not balance his back while sitting on bed. Now he plays with two kilo-balls, While sitting on bed. Some Sensory feelings are there in his legs which were not there previously. He has not some feeling of urination also. He is diabetic and used to take medicines for diabetes. Now he does not need it. He is out of stress. How he has become independent and was sent back home. 

Other persons were having almost similar problems except diabetes. Similar treatment was given to them.
