Pingalwara Announces 2027 as Environmental Awareness Centenary Year

The head of the Pingalwara Society, Dr. Inderjit Kaur Ji, has announced that the year 2027 will be specially observed as the “Environmental Awareness Centenary” to mark 100 years of the environmental protection movement initiated by Sant Bhagat Puran Singh Ji in 1927.

Dr. Inderjit Kaur Ji stated that Bhagat Ji not only devoted his life to the service of humanity but also made sensitivity towards nature an integral part of life. His message was that if human beings live in harmony with nature, society will prosper.

As part of the centenary celebrations, a special appeal has been made to schools, colleges, and universities across Punjab to organize lectures, seminars, debates, poster-making competitions, and tree plantation drives related to environmental conservation. It has also been suggested to launch a campaign titled “One Student – One Tree” to inspire students and instill a sense of responsibility among the younger generation.

Expressing concern over floods and climate change, Dr. Inderjit Kaur Ji emphasized that bamboo and khas plants should be planted along weak river embankments. She also appealed for the implementation of rainwater harvesting systems in both rural and urban areas, highlighting that every drop of water is precious and must be conserved through widespread awareness.

Meet Nimana Ji appealed to transform the plastic-free Punjab campaign into a mass movement. He stressed the use of cloth bags in markets and the importance of involving young children in this initiative. He also suggested adopting a model from an NGO in Panchkula, where an ATM machine dispenses cloth bags for ₹10, and implementing similar systems in Punjab.

Dr. Swarajbir Singh Ji announced the preparation of a theatrical script on environmental awareness, which will be used to spread awareness in both villages and cities. Plans have been made to run the campaign on a large scale with the support of social and religious organizations, farmers’ unions, and the working class.

Dr. Pyare Lal Garg Ji suggested forming teams of 5 to 10 members in every city to conduct door-to-door awareness campaigns using slogans such as “Let us give up plastic, let us save water.” He also emphasized the need for regular classes and seminars on environmental protection in schools with the support of teachers.

Balbir Singh Rajewal Ji informed that a meeting with workers of farmers’ organizations was held on March 17 at Kisan Bhawan to discuss water conservation and plastic-free village and city initiatives. He emphasized the need to adopt modern techniques in agriculture to conserve water and to train young farmers accordingly.

Dr. Jaskirat Singh Ji expressed serious concern over industrial wastewater being discharged into rivers, stating that it poses a significant threat to the health of future generations. He demanded strict government regulations and the use of modern technologies for wastewater treatment.

In conclusion, Dr. Inderjit Kaur Ji appealed to the government to establish a dedicated university for environmental studies and to issue a commemorative coin in the name of Sant Bhagat Puran Singh Ji. She stated that such steps would not only honor his legacy but also inspire the younger generation.

The organization appealed to the entire society to turn the “Environmental Awareness Centenary” into a mass movement by starting from their own homes—conserving water, planting trees, and protecting nature—so as to ensure a clean and green environment for future generations.
